The biggest downside with the spears is that the very best ones are already enchanted (Spear of the Hunter, Spear of Bitter Mercy, Greed, Illkurok). They do have range but so do staves and the Ebony Staff has great enchantment potential.
The best unenchanted spear is either the Daedric Spear or the Glass Halberd. The Daedric Spear is heavy (42lbs) compared to the Halberd (8.4lbs), but the Halberd has almost no enchantment potential.Ultimately I think it's clear that Short Blade will suit you better. The Daedric Wakizashi is excellent and has fairly okay enchantment potential.
